Game and utility software maker
Ambrosia Software Inc.
on Monday has re-released two classic games, this time as native for Mac OS X and Windows: Escape Velocity and its sequel, Escape Velocity Override.
The Escape Velocity series was first introduced in the mid-90s. It’s an open-ended game that combines action and adventure as you assume the role of the pilot of a cargo shuttle in outer space. You’re caught up in a web of interstellar intrigue involving warring factions vying for control of the galaxy.
With a limited budget and limited resources, you accept jobs for hire and shuttle passengers and freight — and sometimes perform special missions — in return for cash, which you can use to improve your vehicle or replace it all together with faster, larger and more heavily armed vessels. Some special missions then cause the game to branch out into different storylines.
Escape Velocity: Override expands the game to a universe five times the size of the original game, with improved graphics and new sound effects as well.
Ambrosia released a “threequel” to the series, Escape Velocity: Nova, and these re-releases of the game’s predecessors are free to registered EV: Nova customers, according to the company.
