Adobe Systems Inc. has rolled out a new version of Adobe Font Folio featuring the Adobe Type Library in OpenType format on one CD-ROM. The Adobe Font Folio (OpenType Edition) product contains over 2,000 fonts in OpenType format.
OpenType is a cross-platform font file format developed jointly by Adobe and Microsoft. The two main benefits of the OpenType format are its cross-platform compatibility (the same font file works on Mac and Windows computers), and its ability to support widely expanded character sets and layout features, which provide richer linguistic support and advanced typographic control.
OpenType fonts can be installed and used alongside PostScript Type 1 and TrueType fonts. They’re natively supported in Mac OS X, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. Older operating systems obtain OpenType support through Adobe Type Manager ATM Light, a free system software component that’s available for download.
The Adobe Font Folio (OpenType Edition) product is available immediately for US$8,999, which includes a standard 20-computer license. License extensions are also available and Font Folio is included in Adobe’s transactional and contractual licensing programs. Upgrade pricing from Font Folio versions 8 or 9 to Font Folio OpenType Edition is US$2,499. There’s a special 10-computer license of Font Folio OpenType Edition for smaller design workplaces available for US$4,999. International English versions are available where localized versions aren’t sold.
