Every week MacCentral brings readers the latest game news, but there are always a few items that don’t make it onto our regular news pages — that’s why we have this weekly retrospective, called the Week in Games. It gives us an opportunity to catch up on highlights from other Mac sites as well.
Combat Mission: Afrika Korps screenshots offered
Battlefront.com has posted a new gallery of screenshots for Combat Mission: Afrika Korps, its forthcoming turn-based/real-time strategy game of World War II-era tactical warfare for one or two players. Based on the same engine as Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin, Combat Mission: Afrika Korps puts players in combat in North Africa, Italy, Sicily and Crete. It’s Mac OS 9-only, however.
Downfall v2.1 available
Norbyte Software has released v2.1 of Downfall, the company’s 3D arcade-style puzzle game. The new release sports a new board, a Reset Highscores function, improved help, a better pause function and other changes.
Geneforge 2 v1.0.1 released
Spiderweb Software has released an update Geneforce 2, their recently-released fantasy role-playing game for the Mac. The update fixes “several irritating bugs,” according to the developer. Geneforge puts players in a fantasy realm with the ability to create their own obedient monsters.
Hillbilly Whack! Save Winnie May! coming soon
Small Fry Studios is getting ready to release Hillbilly Whack! Save Winnie May!, a retro-arcade game that harkens back to simple, blocky graphical style of first-generation video game consoles and early computer games. Hillbilly Whack will feature 14 levels and will work on Mac OS X and various flavors of Windows.
Hooptie 0.3.0 released
The Inkubator Project, an offshoot of iDevGames.com, has launched Hooptie 0.3.0, an arcade game in which you play a penguin trying to save his home from invading aliens. The download includes a binary of the game and its source code. A level editor is also included.
Mac Mod Medley dedicated to Halo editing tools
Mac Mod Medley is a new Web site dedicated to making sure that Halo mod/editing tools are available to Mac gamers. Halo is coming from MacSoft later this year, once the PC version is complete.
Mutant Storm v1.3 released
Pompom Games has posted an update to Mutant Storm, the company’s Robotron 2084 homage. The new 1.3 version includes some minor fixes and a new front end interface that can be controlled using a mouse.
X2: Wolverine’s Revenge trailer posted to Apple site
Wanna take a look at Aspyr Media’s forthcoming release of X2: Wolverine’s Revenge? Visit Apple’s Web site. Apple’s QuickTime trailer of the game is one of the latest in their ever-growing library of game trailers.

MacGamer has posted a review of Burning Monkey Solitaire 3, Freeverse Software’s latest version of its popular card game series. Inside Mac Games has posted a preview of The Sims Superstar, the latest expansion pack for the long-running hit game from Aspyr Media. Apple’s Games site has posted a look at Warrior Kings, Feral Interactive’s latest effort.
Closer to home
This week MacCentral posted news about Warrior Kings shipping. Aspyr Media announced that it would make The Sims Superstar, an expansion pack for The Sims. Gamers anxious to get their hands on Apple’s latest heavy iron may be disappointed to hear that there are some delays associated with dual 2.0GHz Power Mac G5 shipments. Vivendi Universal released Imaginext Pirate Raider for boys 4 and up. CH Products plans to ship its Virtual Pilot Pro flight sim yoke controller in a USB flavor this coming week. FWB Inc. won’t make RealPC for OS X after all, after promising the software would support graphics acceleration in Windows emulation. MacPlay said it’s done with No One Lives Forever 2: A Spy In H.A.R.M.’s Way and will ship the game in mid-September. America’s Army v1.9 has been released, bringing the Mac version to parity with its Windows counterpart.
