SmartDisk Corp. on Wednesday introduced CrossFire, a new line of hard drives with both USB 2.0 and FireWire connectivity. Due to ship Oct. 6, the drives sport 3.5-inch, 7200-RPM mechanisms and capacities up to 250GB.
The CrossFire drives — which measure 8.7 by 5 by 1.5 inches — bring the design of SmartDisk’s FireLite portable devices to higher capacity desktop drives. The FireLite and CrossFire drives are made of magnesium alloy, one of the strongest materials on the planet by weight, according to SmartDisk.
The CrossFire line is compatible with Mac OS X (10.1 and higher) and Mac OS X 8.6-9.x. They’re build for quiet operation since they have no internal fan, according to SmartDisk spokesperson Charles Klinker. The drives have two 6-pin FireWire 400 ports and one USB 2.0 port. Pricing hasn’t yet been announced.
