Daystar Technology on Tuesday announced the XLR8 MAChSpeed G4 Pismo, a processor upgrade for “Pismo” (or FireWire-equipped) PowerBook G3 models. The MAChSpeed G4 Pismo is available in 500 and 550MHz speeds, both equipped with 250MHz cache.
Daystar claims the new upgrade runs cooler and offers longer battery life than competitive offerings. It’s factory-installed by Daystar “due to the sensitivity of the electronics within the PowerBook G4 and the need for low-power tuning.”
Two installation services are available: “Standard” and “Week-ender.” “Standard” installation includes two day shipping, CPU upgrade installation, testing, MAChSpeed Control software installation and an XLR8 Point&Scroll USB mouse. The 500MHz upgrade costs US$289 and the 550MHz upgrade costs $329.
The “Week-ender” installation program has users send the PowerBook back on a Thursday evening, the system is upgraded, and returned to them on Monday. The cost for the “Week-ender” service is $329 and $369 respectively.
Additional fees are charged for delivery of a container to ship your PowerBook. International upgrades using the Standard installation method are also available for an added shipping fee of $50, and additional container charges.
