Destineer subsidiary MacSoft on Friday announced plans to publish Epic Games’ Unreal Tournament 2004 for Macintosh.
Mac gamers who were put off by the difference between the PC and Mac release dates of Unreal Tournament 2003 should be happy with the production schedule for this version, according to Epic’s Mark Rein. “We’ve been working on the Mac version of Unreal Tournament 2004 right alongside the Windows version. Mac users should get a nice surprise when the official ship dates are announced.”
Unreal Tournament 2004 is the latest iteration of the enormously popular first-person shooter that features gladiatorial combat set in the future. UT 2004 is the first installment of the game to offer control of land an air vehicles. What’s more, the game also sports new weapons including mines, rocket-propelled grenades and stationary gun turrets.
The new version of Unreal Tournament also features “the UnrealTV broadcast system,” which allows up to hundreds of gamers to log on and view combat as it happens. The dreaded Skaarj also make their return in this new release as a playable race.
Unreal Tournament 2004 is still in development for Windows — in fact, the game’s release date was recently postponed until next year. MacSoft said that the game will be available “midway through the first quarter of 2004.”
