Apple today announced that its iTunes Music Store has sold more than 25 million songs since it was opened in April, 2003. The official word comes a week after Apple director of marketing for iTunes Peter Lowe announced that the company had sold more than 20 million songs, during his presentation to music industry representatives at the recent Music 2.0 conference.
The 25 millionth song was, appropriately enough for many in North America, Frank Sinatra singing “Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!”
The company also indicated that more than US$1 million of iTunes gift certificates have been purchased; gift certificates are one of the many new features of the iTunes Music Store that were introduced when Apple unveiled Windows support for the commercial online music download service this past October.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the 25 million song mark makes iTunes Music Store “hands-down the most successful online music store.” Extrapolating based on this traffic, Jobs said that the numbers show that the iTunes Music Store is selling about 1.5 million songs per week, or 75 million songs per year.
