Apple on Wednesday released QuickTime v6.5, a new version of its core multimedia technology for the Mac and Windows. The new version incorporates new features and updates, including expanded support for mobile multimedia, improved DV playback options and more.
Apple noted that QuickTime 6.5 adds expanded support for 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and 3GPP2 mobile multimedia formats — intended for the latest generation of multimedia-capable cell phones. Support for the formats includes the use of Advanced Audio Codec (AAC), Adaptive Multi-Rate (AMR) and Qualcomm Code Excited Linear Predictive (QCELP) audio codecs, MPEG-4 and H.263 video codecs, 3G Times Text, native .3gp and .3g2 file formats and support for Movie Fragments.
Other new features of QuickTime 6.5 include the addition of Unicode text support, enhanced DV playback, and performance improvements associated with iMovie, iDVD and Final Cut Pro.
