Every week MacCentral brings readers the latest news from the world of Mac gaming. There are always a few stories that don’t make it onto our regular news pages, though, which is why we have this weekly retrospective.
Alida publishing plans announced
Alida — the Myst-like graphical adventure game set on an island turned into a theme park by a rock band — will begin shipping in North America early next year courtesy of
Got Game Entertainment. The game was released in 2003 but has seen limited distribution, partly because it was initially available for “Classic” Mac OS only.
Alien Flux comes to Mac
has released Alien Flux v1.5, and with it, a Mac OS X version. It’s a fast-paced arcade shooter in which you have to save fuzzy critters from being kidnapped by alien foes.
Battle for Wesnoth 0.6.1 released
The freeware fantasy turn-based strategy game
Battle for Wesnoth
has seen a new update. There are a ton of changes in the new release — Mac users skipped over the 0.6.0 version, which had a nasty bug, according to the developers.
Cosmic Encounter Online adds 23rd alien
Future Pastimes has announced the addition of the 23rd alien — called The Healer — to
Cosmic Encounter Online, the computer version of the legendary board strategy game. That makes 8,855 possible combinations of aliens with which to play the game.
Downfall 2.2.1 released
Norbyte has released
v2.2.1, a new version of their shareware 3D arcade puzzle game. The update features a new sound effect and improved board help.
Escape Velocity: Nova v1.0.7
Ambrosia Software has released
Escape Velocity: Nova
v1.0.7, a new version of the action/adventure game set in outer space. The new version gains bug fixes, including support for Mac OS X v10.3 “Panther.”
GameRanger adds Raven Shield support
The online Mac-centric game matching service
has added support for Rainbow Six 3: Raven Shield, the new tactical action/strategy game that was just released by Aspyr Media Inc.
Jedi Academy patched
Aspyr may have just started to ship Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy, but already they’ve
posted a patch
to bring it to v1.0.1a. The new release fixes visual glitches, crashing bugs, performance problems and more.
Makin’ Magic trailer posted
Apple’s Games site has posted
a QuickTime trailer
for Makin’ Magic, the new Sims expansion pack currently in development for Mac.
Pop-Pop v1.0.3 released
Ambrosia Software has also released an updated version of
Pop-Pop, their wild and wacky arcade-style brickbashing game. The new release, 1.0.3, gains bug fixes and Mac OS X v10.3 “Panther” compatibility.
DerBrill has released their first Mac game —
Yibbah!, in which you jump on as many platforms as you can. It’s been released as Donationware, and is available for both Mac OS X and “Classic” Mac OS.
