Western Digital Corp.
has introduced two new external drives: the Media Center and a series of hard drives with Dual-option Backup.
Media Center combines a 160GB, 200GB, or 250GB hard drive with an 8-in-1 memory card reader and Dual-option Backup in one device. The Dual-option Backup drives come in 120GB, 160GB, 200GB, and 250GB sizes. Dual-option Backup allows you to back up your data either automatically or on demand by pressing a single button, which glows blue to confirm a recurring backup that you scheduled to occur automatically. It can also back up data from multiple sources.
Both drives also feature a built-in USB 2.0 hub, two FireWire ports, Dantz Retrospect Express software, Safe Shutdown for extra data security, and Kensington security locks. The 8-in-1 memory card reader in the Media Center is compatible with CompactFlash Type I and II, IBM Microdrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, Memory Stick PRO, MultiMedia Card, and SD Card.
Mac OS X v.10.1.3 or higher is required for both drives, which will be available this month. Suggested retail price for the 250GB Media Center is US$399; the 250GB Dual-option Backup drive will be $349. Prices for the other sizes were not given.
