German developer DEVONtechnologies announced on Tuesday that updates to its freeform database DEVONthink, as well as its thumbnail creator ThumbsUp, now available. In addition, the company published XMenu, a new freeware tool for Mac OS X that’s similar to the original Apple Menu.
DEVONthink 1.7.5 adds support to play QuickTime movies, as well as MP3s, MP4s and other sound files, within the application. DEVONtechnologies also debuted two new Services menu commands that append selected text to the last note taken, a new sample AppleScript that imports messages from Microsoft Entourage, a feature that allows the column view to display outline checkboxes and comments, tooltip extensions, new contextual menu commands and plug-ins enabled in HTML views, and drag-and-drop Safari bookmark import.
ThumbsUp introduces the ability to create thumbnails in a sub-folder, a new option to only create icons for the original image files, support for the BMP thumbnail format, and images that sharpen up to 30 percent faster than before.
Finally, XMenu gives you the ability to bring back the old Apple Menu and allows you to create XMenus for your Applications, Home, and Documents folder, as well as other folders, files, and applications. It features automatic menu and submenu updates when you make changes and it’s able to follow aliases and symbolic links.
XMenu and the DEVONthink and ThumbsUp updates are available as free downloads from the DEVONtechnologies Web site. DEVONthink requires Mac OS X v10.2 (Jaguar) or higher, with Safari installed, XMenu requires Mac OS X v10.3 (Panther) or higher, and ThumbsUp requires Mac OS X v10.2 or higher. DEVONthink costs US$35 ($60 as a bundle with DEVONagent) after the evaluation period ends.
