Avid Technology Inc. announced on Wednesday that they’ve won their second Oscar: an Academy Award of Merit for their Digidesign audio division’s Pro Tools application, which is widely used in Hollywood for creating and editing movie soundtracks. The company will receive their statuette during the Scientific and Technical Academy Awards on February 14.
Avid won its first Oscar five years ago for its Film Composer system. President and CEO David Krall noted: “For two decades, Digidesign has pioneered the world of digital audio production, shaping the way professionals create soundtracks and music for feature films. We’re extremely proud to see the Academy recognize Digidesign as the gold standard for sound in motion pictures. Only a handful of companies have won two statuettes — and it feels great to be one of them.”
The Academy has handed out 5 Oscars for innovations in sound engineering — and only 42 scientific and technical achievement awards total — during its 76-year history.
