Apple on Thursday released an update to the software that powers its iSight video camera. The new version is available for download from the Software Update system preference pane. You can also download it from the Web site.
Apple introduced iSight in 2003 at the same time as the first public beta release of its iChat AV software, a audio and video conferencing version of its popular instant messaging software. iChat AV has since become a standard part of Mac OS X v10.3 “Panther.” The iSight itself is a small FireWire-based video camera that enables users to capture both audio and video from any FireWire-equipped Macintosh.
The new version of the iSight software improves auto exposure and auto white balance functionality, according to Apple, and also enhances Instrumentation & Industrial Digital Camera (IIDC) compliance and better overall performance. The software, once downloaded to the Mac, then updates the software on the iSight camera itself.
Apple recommends that all iSight users upgrade to the new version.
