KVM peripheral maker
has released its ex-tend-it FireWire Extender. The new extender is aimed at pros who need to attach FireWire peripherals and devices a long distance from the host computer.
With the FireWire Extender in place, Macs and other devices that use FireWire can attach to FireWire peripherals, like digital cameras and more, up to 500 meters (or 1,640 feet) from each other. The device uses a sender and receiver system to transmit data at speeds up to 350 to 400Mbps. Data is sent using fiber optic cabling.
The FireWire Extender costs US$899. It includes short-range connection cables and an external power supply.
