Video and computer game publisher Ubisoft has announced that it has acquired Austin, Texas-based Wolfpack Studios. Wolfpack Studios is the developer behind Shadowbane, the massively multiplayer online game for Mac and PC.
Shadowbane launched about a year ago, simultaneously for the Mac and PC — a rarity in the game world and unique among massively multiplayer online games, which rarely if ever come to the Mac and only then usually months or years after their PC counterparts. A new expansion pack for Shadowbane, “The Rise of Chaos,” was recently finished. Ubisoft and Wolfpack said that the studio will continue to develop content for Shadowbane as well.
In Shadowbane, players occupy the wartorn fantasy world of Aerynth. In their online game personas, players can go on quests alone or they can build cities, rule empires, raise armies and more. Players can craft their characters from a number of different species, and can choose from a variety of different skills and professions.
Like many massively multiplayer online role playing games, Shadowbane requires players to purchase the software, then Ubisoft charges a monthly fee in order to play. A free trial version is available for download from the Web site.
