Following its introduction at Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco, Calif. in January, storage peripheral maker WiebeTech LLC is now shipping G5Jam in a new configuration. G5Jam was originally sold in 640GB and 1TB capacities; the new G5J-0 configuration sold by WiebeTech allows buyers to add their own drives instead.
G5Jam is an internal storage system for Power Mac G5 computers that enables users to increase internal storage to up to four drives — the Power Mac G5 can handle two drives on its own; G5Jam doubles that capacity. WiebeTech said that the system can handle up to 200MB/sec transfer when configured as a RAID using Apple’s own Disk Utility.
G5Jam includes a replacement G5 air baffle that allows mounting of two additional drives in the G5. It’s constructed from mirror aluminum and preserves the G5’s internal air flow while serving as a heat sink for the two additional drives. A Serial ATA (SATA) host card is also included, which installs in an open PCI slot, as well as cables.
The new “drives not included” configuration for G5Jam costs US$499.95. Versions of the kit populated with drives range from $899.95 for the 320GB configuration to $2,199.95 for the 1TB configuration.
