Avid Technology Inc., Apple’s major competitor in the digital video editing space, announced on Friday that the company has extended Mac OS X v.10.3.2 “Panther” support to Avid Xpress DV, Avid Xpress Pro, and Media Composer Adrenaline set-ups running on dual- and single-processor Power Mac G4 and G5 computers. The update also adds support for the Ultra320 LVD (UL4D) SCSI storage controller for the G5.
In addition, Avid enhanced its line of shared storage applications with updates to Avid Unity MediaNetwork and Avid Unity LANshare EX that add Fibre- and Ethernet-attached Mac OS X v.10.3.2 client support.
“With these updates, video and film editors can use our industry-standard Mac-based Avid tools on a range of qualified Power Macs and PowerBooks with the latest OS and the highest-performance SCSI storage,” said Charlie Russell, senior manager of product marketing for Avid. “In addition, our Mac-based editing customers [also now have] the ability to tap the powerful shared-storage capabilities that have made Avid Unity a media management staple in leading postproduction facilities around the world.”
Avid Xpress DV and Xpress Pro offer a variety of powerful digital video editing tools, including customizable real-time effects, and DVD authoring. Xpress Pro adds pro-level DVD authoring capabilities, 3D effects and compositing, encoding in MPEG-4, and more. Media Composer Adrenaline offers DV editing capabilities in the context of the workflows found in large editing houses. The Avid Unity products help manage large numbers of shared digital video files.
