Raining Data recently announced that Omnis Studio 4.0 is now available. Omnis Studio is a Rapid Application Development (RAD) tool that can be used to build e-business, database, and client/server applications. This new version features native access to MySQL, access to J2SE Java-based objects, JDBC connectivity, bug fixes, and more.
In addition, Omnis Studio 4.0 offers Studio applets that allow you to publish Omnis code in other environments. New method editor and debugger options have been added. A new Studio Browser incorporates SQL Browser and other tools, as well as improvements to the Omnis VCS, such as the addition of Object DAMs and encrypted passwords.
You can purchase Omnis Studio 4.0 in one of three editions: Standard, Enterprise, or Web. The Standard edition, which is US$250 per license, is aimed at small-to-medium size businesses and entry-level developers. It includes the Omnis database and OmnisSQL.
The $1,250 Enterprise edition provides the tools required by developer teams and larger companies. In addition to the Standard edition’s offerings, the Enterprise edition includes multi-threaded data access modules for direct access to Oracle, Sybase, DB2, Informix, MySQL, as well as via JDBC and ODBC.
Finally, the $2,495 Web edition was built for developer teams and larger companies who want to create multi-tier Internet- or intranet-based applications. In addition to the Standard and Enterprise editions’ offerings, it includes Omnis VCS.
System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.3 “Panther,” a PowerPC G3 or higher, 128MB RAM, and 70MB free hard drive space.
