PowerLogix on Monday announced new 1GHz CPU upgrades for PowerBook G3 “Pismo,” Power Mac G3, and first-generation Power Mac G4 models. The new upgrades are based on the PowerPC 750 GX CPU — a so-called “G3” processor and the successor to the 750 FX, running at higher speeds and equipped with more cache.
The Blue Chip G3 Pismo upgrades PowerBook G3 “Pismo” models (those equipped with on-board FireWire connectivity). The upgraded processor can be adjusted to a lower clock speed on the fly to conserve battery life. The PowerForce G3 ZIF is compatible with beige and blue and white Power Mac G3 models, as well as the original PCI-only Power Mac G4 — sometimes known by its code-name “Yikes.”
The Blue Chip G3 1.0GHz Pismo upgrade costs about US$400; the PowerForce G3 1.0GHz ZIF upgrade costs about $350. Both upgrades are available now, but PowerLogix noted that availability will be limited until IBM ramps up production of the new CPU.
