As MacCentral first reported in March, Apple subsidiary FileMaker Inc. plans to release a preview version of FileMaker Server 7, its server software designed to manage shared FileMaker Pro 7 databases. FileMaker offered more details about the forthcoming preview release today.
FileMaker Pro 7 got a major upgrade in features and architecture when it was released last month, and FileMaker Server 7 has been similarly overhauled. The software is capable of hosting millions of data tables; protects data using Secure Socket Layer (SSL), and performs live backups of data without interrupting other users. It can also work with external authentication based on Active Directory or Open Directory.
Users interested in giving FileMaker Server 7 a try can pre-register by filling out an online form. The full or trial versions of FileMaker Pro 7 are required in order for the server software to work. Other system requirements apply as well: G4/500MHz or faster, Mac OS X v10.2.8 or higher, 256MB RAM, CD-ROM drive and 1GB of hard disk space.
