Terra Soft Solutions Inc. has posted details about its two-year roadmap for the PowerPC-based Linux implementation. The details cover Yellow Dog Linux, Terra Soft’s 32-bit offering, and Y-HPC, Terra Soft’s 64-bit solution.
Both Linux implementations are built on the Red Hat-sponsored Fedora Project, a community-supported open source project purposed with the goal of building a general purpose operating system using free software. Yellow Dog Linux is built on the 2.6 kernel and 32-bit libraries, while Y-HPC is built on the 2.6 kernel and 64-bit libraries, offering double-precision, 16GB memory addressing and the gcc 64-bit tool chain.
Terra Soft Solutions plans to continue to offer Yellow Dog Linux, preinstalled on Macs and available for online download and in retail packaging. What’s more, the company will offer “Y-HPC,” a 64-bit optimized Linux implementation, which will be available pre-installed on Apple, IBM and Momentum hardware built around IBM’s PowerPC 970 architecture (Apple’s “G5” systems). Y-HPC will also be available for download through Terra Soft’s forthcoming YDL.net Professional service. A beta version of Y-HPC is now available through Terra Soft’s YDL.net Enhanced service.
Both Linux implementations will be released at the end of May, according to Terra Soft.
