Just in time for moving my mother’s AOL account to a new Mac (and probably demoting AOL to a secondary service), AOL announced its Open Mail Access plan — one where you can finally use AOL’s mail with software other than AOL’s homegrown client.
As the link above explains, AOL now offers access via IMAP.
For those who’d like to cut to the chase, world’s nicest guy, Jim Akin (known in the pages of the now deceased MacUser as Jim Shatz-Akin), passes along the dope:
Your user name and password are the same as your AOL screen name and password. You’ll need to configure your email client so that the incoming e-mail server address is imap.aol.com. The outgoing email server address is smtp.aol.com.
Finally, you must configure the outgoing mail (SMTP) port number to 587.
