It’s a clunky title for a creative kick in the pants: the
Art Directors Invitational Masters Class (ADIM). This yearly conference is masterminded by Russell Brown, creative director at Adobe Systems. The 2004 ADIM was March 23 through 26, and I was there.
Russell is a freak — but in a good way. His tennis shoes are adorned with flames, as are his bowling shirts. And that’s just what he wears to the office. At ADIM, he really lets loose. In only two years of attending ADIM, I’ve seen Russell as Caesar Saladus, a Roman centurion (but with dashing Salvador Dali mustachios), a Greek statue, James Bond, and Dr. No, Dr. Yes, and Dr. Maybe.
Russell’s willingness to make a fool of himself frees the conference attendees. People who are experienced designers, art directors, and photographers at other times turn into playful children.
I’ve learned a lot, too. In future issues of

It’s hard to convey the spirit of ADIM in words, so I’ve included a few photos from one of the parties, when attendees were encouraged to dress according to this year’s secret agent theme.
