Aspyr Media Inc. announced Monday that its Mac conversion of Electronic Arts’ hit game Command & Conquer Generals is now shipping. The company expects its retail partners to have the game in stock by April 16, 2004.
Command & Conquer Generals is the first installment of the enormously popular game series to reach the Mac market since the original Command & Conquer debuted in 1998. It’s a real-time strategy game set in the near future, in which you can take the role of three different sides: The global superpowers of the United States and China, as well as the terrorist organization called the Global Liberation Army. Each side sports strengths and weaknesses as you seek to manage your resources, troops and special units effectively.
The game features detailed 3D environments and unit designs, and features all-new units you haven’t seen in previous Command & Conquer installments like Aurora Strike Bombers, Dragon Tanks and more. You can also go head-to-head in online multiplayer battles against other Mac users.
Rated T for Teen by the ESRB, Command & Conquer Generals will cost about US$50 when it hits store shelves. System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2.6 or later, G4/1GHz or faster, 256MB RAM, 1.6GB free hard disk space, ATI Radeon 7500 or Nvidia GeForce2 MX or better video system with at least 32MB VRAM, and a DVD drive to both install and play.
Last week Aspyr released a demo version of Command & Conquer Generals; since then it’s been noted that the game has an issue with Power Mac G4 systems equipped with ATI Radeon 9000 graphics hardware. Aspyr advised MacCentral on Monday that an update patch will be released “very soon” for both the demo and the retail version to address this issue.
