If you have an account through America Online (AOL), you don’t need to use AOL’s software to check it anymore. America Online Inc. on Wednesday announced its new Open Mail Access feature, which enables Mac and PC users to check their AOL mail using third-party applications that support the Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) protocol.
IMAP provides server-side storage and automatic synchronization of messages and folders. It’s supported by various e-mail clients including Eudora, Entourage, and Apple Mail. AOL’s anti-spam technology works through the servers, rather the client, so mail checked in this manner is still protected by AOL’s Mail and Spam Controls.
