Toshiba Corp. on Thursday introduced the MK1031GAS, a 100GB 2.5-inch hard disk drive mechanism aimed at the laptop market. The company said the new drive provides higher capacity, better shock resistance and lower power consumption than the drives that have preceded it.
Equipped with an ATA-6 interface and with an average seek time of 12ms, the drive runs at 4,200RPM. The new drive is 9.5mm high and sports a shock resistance rating of 325G — 50 percent higher than Toshiba’s current 2.5-inch line. It also consumes 20 percent less power on average by using pulse width modulation (PWM).
Samples of the MK1031GAS will be available in May. Unit pricing was not announced. Toshiba’s Web site had not been updated with information about the new drive as MacCentral posted this article.
