Smith Micro Software Inc.’s QuickLink Mobile lets Mac OS X laptop users access the Internet through data-capable cell phones via USB and Bluetooth. The 2.0 version now supports popular PC Card-based Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) interfaces; adds support for EDGE, a high-speed data service available through some cellular networks; and also automatically seeks out and identifies Wi-Fi “hotspots” — it’ll also let you know if the nearby Wi-Fi service is one to which you subscribe. Prices range from US$29.95 to $49.95 depending on whether you need a cable or just software; upgrades from 1.x cost $14.95.
