Sony on Monday announced its newest external DVD burner, and expects the new model to ship in October for US$280. The DRU-710UL — featuring the same mechanism used in Sony’s currently shipping DRU-710A internal model — is a 16x DVD+R recordable drive featuring USB 2.0 and FireWire interfaces that comes with Roxio Toast 6.0.x. It can burn double-layer DVDs containing up to 8.5GB of data. The new drive burns DVD+R DL media at 2.4x and also supports DVD+R media at 16x, DVD-R at 8x, DVD±RW at 4x, CD-R at 48x and CD-RW media at 24x. AHEAD’s Nero software for PCs is also included.
