Hewlett-Packard’s online store, HPshopping.com, on Friday introduced “Apple iPod from HP,” the company’s long-awaited version of the iPod. HP is selling 20GB and 40GB versions of the iPod for US$299.99 and $399.99 respectively, the same price as Apple. HP’s Web site indicates the device will begin shipping on September 15.
The Apple iPod from HP appears to be identical to Apple’s own fourth-generation iPod — it features a click-wheel interface, backlit LCD screen and support for FireWire and USB 2.0 using an included connectivity cable and docking station. And while HP’s site focuses on Windows-specific system requirements, the Apple iPod from HP is listed as including iTunes for Windows and Mac.
HP opens up retail floodgates
HP first announced plans to ship its own version of Apple’s iPod in January. Shortly after Apple debuted its fourth-generation iPod in July, HP Chairman and CEO Carly Fiorina announced that her company would ship their iPod in September.
The new Apple iPod from HP will be available online and through major retailers across the US, according to HP — including Circuit City, CompUSA, Best Buy, Office Depot, Staples, Radio Shack, Fry’s, Amazon.com and Costco. The company also plans to promote the Apple iPod from HP in television advertising spots set to air during this weekend’s MTV Video Music Awards show.
Tattoo you
HP is betting that iPod owners will want to customize the look of their digital music players, so the company is also offering HP Printable Tattoos. Available at select CompUSA and Circuit City retail stores, as well as HP’s e-store, the tattoos are stickers embossed with artwork from popular commercial music artists. The stickers wrap around the iPod while still providing access to the Click Wheel and screen — HP says they’re easily removable. HP’s Music Web site shows the tattoos in action. What’s more, HP will offer printable HP Tattoo media that will allow iPod users to create and print their own personalized artwork and photos.
