LaCie has announced two new double layer DVD burners that will ship in September. The Slim DVD+/-RW Double Layer drive (US$229) is available with either a USB 2.0 or a FireWire interface, with the latter able to draw power from the computer port, and sports a slender design for portability. In addition to its ability to burn double layer discs, which is new to the Slim line, the external drive can also handle the DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW, CD-R and CD-RW formats.
The d2 16x DVD+/-RW Double Layer drive features 4x double layer DVD burning and 16x single layer burning — those speeds were 2.4x and 8x, respectively, in the previous edition. An internal model is $129 while the FireWire version is $229 and a dual FireWire/USB drive is $199. Mac OS X v10.2.3 is required for double layer DVD recording.
