Following their surprise announcement earlier this month that Destineer subsidiary MacSoft has ported Railroad Tycoon 3 to the Mac, on Tuesday the company announced it’s shipping the game — Railroad Tycoon 3 will be available in stores this week. It’s a real-time strategy game in which you attempt to build a railroad empire by laying track, routing locomotives and their passengers and freight, trading on the stock market, and buying or creating industries that can use the rails.
Railroad Tycoon was originally developed by PopTop Software and published for the PC by Gathering, which licensed the Mac version to MacSoft. The Mac port was converted by Beenox Studios. System requirements for Railroad Tycoon 3 call for Mac OS X v10.2.8 or higher, G4/400MHz or faster, 256MB RAM, 32MB RAM, ATI Radeon or Nvidia GeForce2 MX or better 3D graphics, 120MB hard disk space and 8x CD-ROM drive. The game also supports multiplayer Mac-to-Mac gaming over the Internet or Local Area Networks (LANs). Railroad Tycoon 3 costs US$49.99.
