AssistiveWare on Wednesday announced an incremental release to its SwitchXS utility for Mac OS X that adds support for Japanese. SwitchXS offers full mouse and keyboard emulation to quadriplegic users and others who can only operate their Macs using one or more switches. Also new in this release is improved support for mixing switch and mouse input, a faster and smaller file format for scan panels, and the ability to display button labels in bold to improve visibility. AssistiveWare has announced that an editor to design custom scanning panels will be released for free in October. SwitchXS v1.5.5 is a free update for current users; the full version costs US$249 or €199 (excluding VAT). System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2 or higher.
