Storage peripheral maker WiebeTech LLC expanded its offerings Wednesday with the introduction of ToughTech, a new external hard drive enclosure with anti-shock protection, and RackFire, a device designed to equip up to two FireWire-based Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks (RAIDs) in one enclosure that occupies 1U of space in a standard equipment rack.
The aluminum-clad ToughTech enclosure is designed to accommodate 3.5-inch IDE disk drive mechanisms, and is available with either FireWire 400 or FireWire 800 interfaces. The drive’s “FlexMount” anti-shock protection protects the mechanism from shock and also helps to reduce noise, according to the company. Pricing ranges from US$79.95 for the basic FireWire 400 enclosure to $629.95 for a full-loaded FireWire 800 version with 400GB of storage.
RackFire is a 1U rackmount enclosure that accepts two removable hot-swappable drive trays. Each tray can accept two sets of IDE drives, which can be striped together using RAID level 0. Each tray features a FireWire 800 bridge using Oxford Semiconductor’s OXUF912 bridge chip. The RackFire features dual independent non-redundant power supplies and dual fans. It includes brackets, FireWire 800 cables and an AC cable. The base model costs $699.95; a 1.6 terabyte (TB) configuration costs $2999.95.
