Hopinkton, Mass.-based EMC Corp. announced Tuesday that it has acquired Retrospect backup software maker Dantz Development Corp. The deal closed on Friday, October 8, 2004 and was done as a cash transaction valued at less than US$50 million. Dantz is EMC’s 15th software acquisition since 2000, according to the company.
Dantz Development Corp. was founded in 1984 and has been a cornerstone of the Macintosh personal and enterprise backup software market for years. Dantz’s Retrospect software is positioned for small and mid-sized businesses and workgroups as well as small office and home users — it enables users to schedule backups to local drives and tape backup systems or remote systems over a network. More recently, Dantz has expanded Retrospect’s abilities to back up Mac OS X Server and Xserve RAID systems as well.
EMC said that Dantz’s acquisition helps the company expand into the small and midsize business software market. Dantz will continue to operate in Walnut Creek, Calif. Dantz’s president and CEO, Larry Zulch, will report to EMC Software Group co-leaders Dave DeWalt and Mark Lewis.
