reports that Brits will soon have the opportunity to download music to mobile phones and digital music players from “digital ATMs” located in such public places as train stations and pubs.
Inspired Broadcast Networks, the company behind the venture, plans to invest 50 million pounds over the next two years replacing existing entertainment devices with the digital music kiosks. In partnership with British media distribution group Entertainment UK and retailer Woolworths Group and EMI Music, the firm may offer as many as 2 million tracks, though a portion of the tracks may only be played back much as one might play a track on a jukebox.
Also unknown is the format in which the songs will be offered. Although marketing photos of the system show an iPod connected to the device, it’s unclear whether the system will provide songs in a format playable by the iPod.
