Apple has started its second Dashboard Widget contest, which runs through Jan. 5. Dashboard is a technology that will be featured in Apple’s release of Mac OS X v10.4 “Tiger,” which the company expects to ship during the first half of 2005. Dashboard opens a semi-transparent layer across your display when you press a specific key; the layer contains Widgets, which are small, self-contained utilities such as a calculator or an RSS news feed. Widgets are based on Apple’s Web Kit, so developers simply need to be well-versed in JavaScript, HTML and CSS to create them. However, this contest is only open to programmers whose Apple Developer Connection memberships include access to Beta versions of Tiger. The winners will receive 40GB iPods and public recognition of their achievements.
