Mac CPU upgrade maker PowerLogix and retailer Other World Computing (OWC) on Thursday announced the release of a 1.0GHz PowerForce 750GX G3 processor upgrade. The new device is aimed at older Power Mac systems that preceded the G3 era to upgrade to a faster processor. It’s compatible with Power Mac 7300 – 9600 era models, and is compatible with select Mac “clones” manufactured by Power Computing and Umax.
The device includes 1MB of Level 2 cache that runs at 1GHz, like the processor. It uses a 20x bus multiplier to operate on these older machines. Other features include a built-in fan sink, protection circuitry, “CPU Director” software and compatibility with PCI cards. Larry O’Connor, OWC President, said the new processor upgrade enables these older computers to work with Mac OS 8.6 and higher, including Mac OS X, when paired with OWC’s XPostFacto software. The card costs US$239.99.
