Each week, Playlist’s Glenn Peoples looks at special tracks offered by the various online music merchants. Here are the selections for the week of January 10th.
iTunes’ Download of the Week is Blue Merle’s Every Ship Must Sail Away, a slow, contemplative track from “the other side of Nashville.” Today’s Exclusive Track brings us the ever-so-handsome Peter Gallagher from The O.C. covering Solomon Burke’s “Don’t Give Up On Me.”
MSN has an exclusive track from “Concert for George,” the all-star live tribute to George Harrison held at London’s Royal Albert Hall in late 2002. Jeff Lynne’s “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” is a touching eulogy to the late Beatle.
New to Rhapsody: Jay-Z‚s The Blueprint and The Black Album, U2’s latest, How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, a slew of albums by new wave feminists Le Tigre, Mya’s self-titled 1998 debut, DJ Shadow’s 1996 landmark …Endtroducing, and a truckload of MCA’s two-on-one reissues from afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti.
Napster: A recent addition is the brand new compilation, Six Degrees Remixed. Put out by the forward-thinking world music label Six Degrees, this comp has dance remixes of songs by Bebel Gilberto, Issa Bagayogo, Midival Punditz and many more. If you can’t get away sip a caipirinha at Ipenema, dance on the beaches of Goa or get dubby in Kingston, this album ain’t a bad way to go.
FYE Download Zone: Just added are U2’s How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb, John Legend’s Get Lifted and Del the Funky Homosapien’s Best Of.
Wal-Mart has an exclusive, three-track EP from soulful rocker Gavin DeGraw. “Live at 7000 Marina Boulevard” (the address of Wal-Mart’s online music store) features “Chariot,” “Just Friends” and “I Don’t Want To Be.”
eMusic. For a niche store like eMusic, the roster of labels is the cornerstone of the business. eMusic has just beefed up its offerings with titles from two great labels: the eclectic Rykodisc catalog (Frank Zappa, Cocteau Twins, Meat Puppets, Bob Mould, Morphine, the Dead Milkmen) and some from K Records’ catalog of indie rock and punk staples (Heavenly, Mecca Normal, the Halo Benders).
