MCE Technologies LLC on Wednesday announced a drop in prices for their 8x DVD±R/RW double-layer drive upgrades for Apple’s PowerBook G4 and Power Mac G4 Cube systems. The drives were formerly available for US$299 for PowerBooks, and are now available for $249. The Cube upgrade was previously priced at $349, and now costs $279.
The upgrade replaces the PowerBook or Cube’s existing optical drive with an 8x DVD±R/RW drive that can support double-layer writable DVD media, writing up to 8.5GB of information onto a double-layer disc. The drive is bootable and fully compatible with iTunes, iDVD, Finder-based disc burning, iPhoto and DVD player. It’s natively supports by Mac OS X v10.3.6 or later, though MCE provides drivers if you’re still using v10.2.x.
The drive is compatible with all PowerBook G4 12-, 15- and 17-inch models and all Power Mac G4 Cube systems. There is an additional charge of $30 if you have a “Titanium” PowerBook G4 15-inch model that currently has a DVD-ROM or CD-ROM drive.
