You already have a Variax guitar, which lets you instantly model more than two dozen different classic guitars. But what happens if you want more? On Wednesday Line 6 announced Variax Workbench, a combination of USB adapter and software that offers Variax guitarists a “virtual custom shop” to enable them to design their own custom guitars using Line 6’s Variax 300, 500 or 700 models.
With Variax Workbench on Mac OS X or Windows, guitarists can specify bodies, pickups and controls they’d like to modeled on their Variax guitars and store custom tunings as well. The Workbench Librarian keeps track of the different settings you’ve created, and you can share them with other Variax users. You can fill each slot on the Variax model knob and five-way switch with guitars of your own specification.
Variax Workbench costs US$139.99. System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.3 or higher and a G4/400MHz or faster, as well as a Variax 300, 500 or 700 guitar and an amplifier available to plug the Variax output into for monitoring.
