Berlin, Germany’s nova media Mobile Data Solutions GmbH has introduced the GlobeTrotter 3G Quad, a new PC card for compatible Apple PowerBooks that lets those systems communicate with cellular-based data networks using Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service (UMTS) connections in Europe and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) connections elsewhere. Bundled with Mobile High Speed 3G software, it’s compatible with Mac OS X v10.2.6 or higher and costs €389 plus VAT (US$478).
The GlobeTrotter 3G works with any PowerBook that can accommodate a Type II PC Card. It operates on 850, 900, 1800, 1900 and 2100MHz networks. The software handles connection details, so you don’t need to manually enter initialization strings, APN numbers, user names and passwords when you want to connect. Supported carriers in North America include Cingular, Dobson Cellular, Microcell Fido, Rogers and T-Mobile.
