Apple has released an update to Xsan, its Storage Area Networking (SAN) file system for Mac OS X. The update is available separately for systems
running Mac OS X v10.3.9
Mac OS X v10.4.x “Tiger.”
Apple has also updated the Xsan Admin software.
Xsan provides the ability for users to concurrently access terabytes or even petabytes of data stored on Xserve RAID systems using high-speed Fibre Channel interfaces. Xsan provides the ability to pool data across multiple RAID devices, which can increase performance.
The update comprises three distinct components: Xsan Admin 1.1 Update, Xsan 1.1 Update for Mac OS X v10.4.1 or later, and Xsan 1.1 Update for Mac OS X v10.3.9. The Xsan updates include fixes that provide greater server stability when resharing Xsan volumes through NFS; handle quotas with no associated user or group name; maintain access to Xsan volumes when metadata controller failovers occur; and operate Xsan in environments with a mix of Mac OS X v10.3.9 and 10.4 systems.
The Xsan 1.1 Update for Tiger also includes the ability to use Xsan on Tiger and Tiger server versions 10.4.1 or later; provide metadata controller services to Mac OS X v10.3.9 or later systems using Xsan 1.1; and can now access volumes larger than 16 terabytes (TB) in size.
Xsan Admin update
is used for the software that remotely administers, configures and maintains Xsan installations. The updated version includes fixes for labeling Fibre Channel LUNs and creating new Xsan volumes; Displaying progress messages while performing lengthy operations; Preventing manually modified configuration settings from being overwritten during a save; Accurately reporting Fibre Channel multipathing errors; Lock View command in Xsan Admin 1.1 can now monitor a SAN from an unsecured computer without the risk of a passerby mounting, unmounting, starting, or stopping volumes, or otherwise changing the SAN configuration; Improvements to email notifications will now alert you if the Xsan software serial number on a controller or client is about to expire; and Now allows the use of site-licensed product license keys (serial numbers).
