Reader Charlie Frick would like to assemble his slideshows in iMovie rather than iPhoto, but faces a problem. He explains:
I like making slideshows of my digital photos and although iPhoto allows for this, I tend to make them in iMovie so that I can add titles and have a little more control over the audio. I just recently upgraded to iLife 05 and noticed that the transitions available for a slideshow in iPhoto are not available in iMovie. I really like using the page flip and cube transitions and was wondering if there is anyway to bridge this gap? If not, is there any way to add blank title screens to a slideshow in iPhoto?
You can approach this one from a couple of different angles. If you’d like to work within iPhoto, you can create a title image in a graphics application (white text on a black background, for example), save it as a jpeg, import it into iPhoto, and include it as part of your slideshow. The downside of this technique is that titles have to be static images—you won’t get the kind of swoopy-doopy moving titles that you can create in iMovie.
Alternatively, you can create the slideshow in iPhoto, invoke the Export command in the Share menu to save it as a QuickTime movie, and then import that movie into iMovie. Once there you can put the Edit menu’s Split Clip at Playhead command to good use by chunking up the slideshow and inserting titles where you’d like.
Yet another alternative is to create the slideshow in iMovie and use some of the many third-party iMovie transitions available today.
GeeThree offers tons of transitions (and titles and effects) in its Slick Transitions & Effects packages. If a comprehensive package of transitions is more than you need
cf/x offers single transitions for a couple of bucks.
