Universal Studios plans to release a theatrical movie version of the popular video game Doom this October. On Wednesday the company launched a Web site to publicize it.
Based on id Software’s legendary game series, Doom (the movie) follows an elite military unit called the Rapid Response Tactical Squad. Led by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the role of Sarge, the team responds to a distress signal sent from a remote science facility on the planet Mars called Olduvai Station.
The team quickly discovers that the facility has been overrun by nightmarish, bloodthirsty monsters. It’s up to the team to seal off the portal to Earth and make sure this hellish onslaught stays contained.
The Doom movie site links to IGN.com, which is hosting QuickTime and Windows Media versions of the teaser trailer. You can also view a Comic-Con question and answer panel for Doom 3 featuring The Rock, recorded earlier this month.
In the more than a decade since the Doom series debuted, the game has made its way to the Mac in its many incarnations, including Doom 3 — released earlier this year by Aspyr Media Inc.
