Encyclopedia Britannica Inc. has announced the release of the
Ultimate Reference Suite 2006, now available on DVD-ROM and CD-ROM for Mac OS X and Windows. It costs US$49.95; free downloadable updates are available for a year and it also comes with a free 90-day subscription to Britannica’s premium service.
The new version includes Homework Helpdesk, which can help students complete papers and oral presentations, includes learning games and activities, and offers statistical information on the countries of the world, among other features. Also new this year are features on history, people and animals that are updated daily, with an easier-to-use interface and improved performance.
The Ultimate Reference Suite includes three encyclopedias: the 32-volume Encyclopedia Britannica, the Britannica Student Encyclopedia and the Britannica Elementary Encyclopedia. It’s aimed at everyone from young children to adults, according to the publisher.
Also included is Britannica BrainStormer, a visual browser that simplifies research; it can now be accessed through keyword searches. A total of 160,000 online links to magazine articles and Web sites is included, as are thousands of images, videos and audio clips. Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary and Thesaurus is also included.
System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.3 or later, G4 or faster, 256MB RAM, 1.1GB hard disk drive space and DVD-ROM drive.
