Reader Fred Stahl and I are frustrated. I’ll let Fred begin:
When working in Mac Office, I am able to navigate through the clip art pane to Microsoft’s online database of clip art, find some items, and download them. Trouble is that the Clip Gallery does not see the files, even though I can see them through the Finder. Worse, the Import function in the Clip Gallery does not recognize the downloaded files as candidates for importing. What have I been missing for years?
That Microsoft has been lax about making sure this feature works with all browsers?
I’ve just spent over an hour trying to make this work with Firefox and I admit defeat—I simply can’t get Firefox to download the clip art files in a way that Clip Gallery will recognize even though I’ve added to Firefox the MIME type (application/vnd.ms-artgalry), file extension (.cll) and description (Clip Art and Media File) Microsoft recommends.
I have made it work with both Safari and Internet Explorer, however. Safari does the right thing when you download these clip art files—it grabs the clip art and when you double click on the downloaded file, Clip Gallery opens and the clips from the downloaded file are added to the Gallery.
Internet Explorer 5.2 is even more accommodating in that it automatically adds the clips to the Gallery once it’s downloaded the clips.
Again, I throw myself on the mercy of my readers. If you can make this work with Firefox, feel free to pitch in by using the Comments link below.
