Daystar Technology previously announced
a CPU upgrade for flat panel iMac G4 700 and 800MHz-based systems to boost their performance to 1.35GHz. Now the company is offering an introductory special that provides free three-way shipping for U.S. customers and free return shipping for International customers, through September 15, 2005.
The XLR8 1350 MAChSpeed G4 iMFP replaces the existing CPU with a faster 1.35GHz model, to help iMac G4 systems originally clocked at 700 and 800MHz keep pace with newer, more demanding applications and system software. It’s equipped with 512K of Level 2 cache. It’s a whole CPU replacement that requires you to send your iMac (or, in the case of international customers, the iMac’s motherboard) to Daystar for upgrading, since the CPU isn’t a user-accessible or upgradable component.
The total cost of the upgrade is US$548 — originally, shipping charges to send a carton to the upgraders’ address, then shipping it Daystar and back again added distinctly more to the cost of the upgrade. Now those costs have been waived.
Customers who already paid for their iMac G4 upgrade are entitled to a shipping refund, according to Daystar, which will send them a check.
