Daystar Technology has added a “zero downtime” option for users who want to upgrade the CPUs on their Pismo-era PowerBook G3 systems with a Daystar MAChSpeed G4 Pismo. The total cost of the upgrade is US$399.
Previously available as a “system based upgrade,” the MAChSpeed G4 Pismo is a card that replaces the CPU on the PowerBook G3’s motherboard with a G4-class CPU clocked at 550MHz, equipped with 250MHz cache. Up to now, users had to send their PowerBooks in to Daystar to be upgraded, but the “zero downtime” option sends a kit to the customer for installation instead.
Also included with the kit is Daystar’s XLR8 MAChSpeed Control CPU software, a heat sink, EMI shield, tools, thermal compound and instructions. Once you’re done with your upgrade, you can return your old components to Daystar; in return, Daystar sends you an $85 rebate check.
