You’ve read all the details, but if you’d like to see it for yourself, Apple has obliged: The company has posted a QuickTime webcast of Wednesday’s special event in which Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the new iPod nano, Motorola ROKR, the world’s first iTunes-equipped cell phone, and iTunes 5, an update to Apple’s popular music jukebox software.
“1000 Songs in your pocket changed everything,” said Apple. “Here we go again.” The reference is to Apple’s original slogan for the iPod, which first debuted in 2001. The 5GB iPod could hold up to about 1,000 songs. Apple later introduced the iPod mini, a small 4GB music player that stored its files on a tiny hard disk drive. And on Wednesday, Apple introduced the iPod nano, an even smaller digital music player that eschews a hard disk drive for a flash memory-based storage system as well, enabling Apple engineers to create a device that’s thinner than a standard pencil.
The QuickTime webcast of the event, which took place on Wednesday, September 7 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, Calif., runs about 1 hour and 4 minutes from start to finish. It features Apple CEO Steve Jobs and representatives from Motorola and Cingular, as well as music celebrities including cellist Yo Yo Ma, pop star Madonna, and R&B star Kanye West, who closed the show with a performance of two of his hit songs.
