Earlier this year Aspyr Media Inc. released a Macintosh conversion of Doom 3, the popular first-person shooter. The high system requirements put off some gamers from buying the title, however. Now Aspyr has released a demo version to give people a taste before they put down their money. It’s available for download from Macgamefiles.com and as a Bittorrent file.
Developed by legendary game maker id Software, Doom 3 is a retelling of the original Doom — in which you are a space marine stationed at a research facility on the planet Mars. Research into teleportation technology has allowed horrific, nightmarish monsters to overrun the base, and it’s up to you to stop the invasion before it reaches planet Earth. Doom 3 features a sophisticated game engine with lighting and texturing effects unlike anything seen on the Mac platform to date.
The demo version lets you play through the first chapter, and includes three levels.
System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.3.8 or later, G4/1.5GHz or faster, 512MB RAM, 2GB free hard disk space, ATI Radeon 9600 or Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 or better 3D graphics with at least 64MB VRAM. The demo measures 463.5MB.
